Cell Patterns
Teacher:
Louann McGraw, sponsored by
Colorado Backporch Time: Saturday, 2:00 pm-3:30 Description:
Do you want to design your own quilt using 2 simple shapes?
As a math teacher Louann has always been fascinated with patterns and
how they could be used to create quilt blocks. She took a seminar
several years ago created by Beatrice Moore-Harris entitled “Helping
Your Struggling Students Be More Successful in Mathematics”. The seminar
covered many math topics including geometric thought and concepts. One
of those concepts consisted of a 4x4 grid with simple shapes that could
be manipulated into many different patterns. Upon returning to my
classroom I made copies of the shapes and challenged my students to
create the twenty-six different 4 x4 patterns. They worked in teams and
against the clock to arrange the two simple shapes into the twenty-six
patterns.
Come and play with these shapes and design a quilt for yourself. Fabric
requirements and suggested layouts provided in the class. Nothing to
bring except your imagination.
